Fall is a beautiful season for engagement photos in Cleveland. Changing leaves, tree-lined park paths, and warm autumn tones create a romantic setting throughout Northeast Ohio. Whether you picture a quiet walk among the leaves or a dressed-up evening downtown, the season offers plenty of ways to make your photographs feel personal.
It is also the season for a favorite sweater, a beautiful jacket, and getting a little closer together. But when you start choosing outfits, the questions come quickly. Should you match? Can you wear black? Is a white dress too summery?
My advice is to start with clothes you feel comfortable wearing, choose a few colors that work together, and plan a layer for cooler weather. You should be able to walk, sit, and lean into each other without constantly adjusting your outfit.
These photographs from my engagement portfolio show several looks you can adapt for fall—from warm neutrals to a dressier downtown style.
Cream, camel, chocolate brown, olive, navy, and burgundy are all lovely starting points. You do not need to wear every autumn color at once. Choose two or three main colors between you, then let the setting add the rest.
Tanisha and Kevin’s outfits are a beautiful example. Her cream knit dress connects with his cream turtleneck, while his camel suit gives the photographs another warm tone. The clothes feel coordinated without being identical.

Here are four combinations to try with pieces you may already own:
| Palette | One outfit | Partner’s outfit |
|---|---|---|
| Cream + camel | Cream knit dress with neutral boots | Camel jacket, cream knit, and tailored trousers |
| Olive + oatmeal | Olive dress or trousers with an oatmeal layer | Oatmeal sweater, dark jeans, and brown boots |
| Burgundy + navy | Burgundy dress or knit with a neutral coat | Navy jacket with a light shirt and simple trousers |
| Black + gray | Black dress or separates with a textured coat | Black knit with gray trousers |
Use these as starting points and choose the pieces that feel like you. Before buying anything, lay both outfits together and check how the colors look side by side.
A dress with a tailored jacket or suit can feel polished and romantic. Jeans, boots, and sweaters can feel relaxed and personal. Either direction works; the goal is for both outfits to look like they belong at the same occasion.
If one of you chooses a formal outfit, give the other look a similarly finished feel. If you both prefer casual clothes, focus on clean shoes, comfortable fits, and pieces in good condition.
Matching colors can work, too. Aly and Tony’s black outfits feel connected, while the gray trousers introduce a second tone. For a fall version, add a jacket, tights, or boots as the weather calls for them.

A ribbed knit, a wool jacket, denim, or a softly draped fabric can add interest without a busy print. Try combining one textured piece with something simpler, such as a knit dress beside a tailored jacket.
Plan your outerwear as part of the outfit. A camel coat, dark blazer, or simple cardigan can be useful in photographs as well as between locations. Check how the layers sit when you hug or put an arm around each other.
For a Cleveland fall session, check the forecast close to your date and bring a warm coat even if you hope to photograph without it. Pay attention to wind as well as temperature, especially if you are planning a lakefront location.
You do not have to limit your outfits to orange and brown. A cream or white dress can feel romantic in any season, and black can create a simple, elegant look. The fabric, layers, and shoes help adapt the outfit to the day.
Allison and Jose’s downtown portraits are a good example of a dressier light palette. Their white clothing creates a clear focal point against the buildings and evening lights. To adapt a look like this for a colder date, consider a longer dress, sleeves, or a coordinating coat.

Try on your complete outfit before the session, including your shoes and outerwear. Walk, sit, raise your arms, and hug your partner. If a piece needs constant adjusting at home, it will probably need adjusting during photographs, too.
Bring comfortable shoes for walking between locations. Boots, flats, loafers, or a sturdy block heel may suit your plans; choose based on the ground you will actually be walking on. If your favorite photo shoes are delicate or difficult to walk in, carry them and change when you reach the location.

A small pattern can work beautifully, especially beside a solid color. Large logos, competing prints, or a very bright accessory may draw attention away from your faces. Keep anything meaningful to your style, but look at the outfits together before deciding.
Steam or iron your clothes, check for lint, and empty bulky pockets before we start. Simple jewelry and a favorite watch can finish an outfit without requiring a whole new wardrobe.
One well-planned outfit can give you plenty of variety. A jacket on or off can change the feeling of a photograph without a full wardrobe change.
If you would like a casual look and a dressier look, discuss that when planning the session so there is time and a suitable place to change. Bring the second outfit ready on a hanger.
The best outfit is one that lets you enjoy being together. Whether you picture warm neutrals among the leaves or an elegant evening downtown, we can plan photographs around your style.
